Six Key Points for Selecting and Maintaining Windshield Wipers

Six Key Points for Selecting and Maintaining Windshield Wipers

Jun 10, 2026

Windshield wipers are essential for driving safety in rainy and snowy weather. Proper selection and maintenance of car wipers are vital to protect both yourself and your vehicle.

Below are practical tips for choosing and maintaining windshield wipers.

1. Check Connection Type and Specifications

Wiper arms connect to wiper blades in two common ways: secured by screws or snap-on fasteners. Refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual to confirm the compatible wiper model and size.

2. Inspect the Rubber Blade for Aging

Lift the wiper and run your fingers along the clean rubber blade. Blades that are worn, stiff or cracked are defective and need replacement.

3. Test Operation at Different Speeds

Switch the wiper to all speed settings, especially the intermittent mode, to ensure it runs at a steady pace.

4. Check Wiping Performance

If the rubber edge fails to fit tightly against the glass and leaves streaks or residue, the wiper is substandard.

5. Listen for Abnormal Motor Noise

A humming motor that fails to move the wiper indicates seized or jammed mechanical parts. Turn off the wiper immediately to avoid burning out the motor.

6. Longer Blades Do Not Equal Better Performance

Many drivers assume longer wiper blades deliver a wider view. While extended blades can expand the wiping area, they also add extra load to the motor and wiper arms. If you opt for longer blades, make sure they do not hinder normal operation.

Daily Maintenance Tips:

First, protect wipers from foreign debris. Sand and fine particles stuck on the blade or windshield can scratch the rubber and cause uneven wiping. Regularly wipe the rubber edge with a soft cloth to remove dust and grit.Maintenance also varies with weather conditions.Rinse the car promptly after rain, as acidic rainwater accelerates rubber aging.Never use wipers to scrape ice or snow off the windshield in winter, which will damage the blades.Adjust the tilt angle of the rubber blade occasionally to prevent deformation.Have poorly fitted wipers adjusted at a professional repair shop in a timely manner to eliminate safety hazards.

Wiper blades are recommended to be replaced every six months to one year. Develop good usage habits: never run dry wipers; always spray washer fluid first. When the vehicle is parked for a long time, prop the wipers up with small blocks to separate blades from the glass, which effectively prolongs their service life.
